Since its inception, Exposure Therapy has functioned as an experiment in co-emergent authorship over the medium of the internet. In the two years since, the collective’s live sessions have become albums, which have expanded into a catalog, and have been released digitally and on physical media through Exposure Therapy, our own label. As of July 2026, this body of work has received a station at ETX.FM, alongside individual works from members of the collective, in a rotating, 24/7 album-first live stream available all over the world.

In the current digital ecosystem, the act of listening has become increasingly fragmented. As detailed in Liz Pelly’s essential Mood Machine, the primary delivery systems for music have evolved in a way that diminishes the album’s artistic integrity, treating individual tracks as data points used to keep listeners engaged between advertisements. The result is a format that reshapes the act of listening and devalues the album as a whole, training audiences to view music as sonic wallpaper tailored to moods, instead of complete artistic statements with a clear narrative arc.

ETX.FM, the new internet radio station launched by the Exposure Therapy Collective, is a reaction to this friction. ETX.FM runs whether or not anyone is listening. 

We spend much time listening to entire albums amongst ourselves, highlighting them in our monthly newsletter, Collected Works, as a way to spend time appreciating the intention and thoughtful work of artists that have made a long-standing statement through music and sound. ETX.FM opens this dialogue to the public with a station that plays albums from the collective twenty-four hours a day, from start to finish, and in the order intended. We made a decision to honor the album as a shape rather than a container of parts, designed to be listened to completely instead of reassembled and restructured on a whim. Where traditional broadcast radio historically relied on singles and rotation, ETX.FM treats the record as the unit of time, moving at the music's pace and inviting the listener to move with it.

In most listening scenarios, the complex architecture of an album has become flattened in the assembly line of the “stream”, and, depending on the platform, sits on the same plane as AI-generated content that more and more proliferates on platforms such as Spotify. "Ambient"  music, once a potent artistic proposition defined by specific artists and albums, has become a nearly meaningless name promising mood-enhancing background music. 

Ironically, ETX.FM takes inspiration from Warp Record’s Artificial Intelligence compilations, a series of albums released in the early 90’s to exhibit the cerebral tendencies of “electronic listening music”, a clarification that we felt noted careful listening, attentiveness, and time spent absorbing and contemplating music.

With this in mind, ETX.FM functions more like a room that exists in a house, regardless of who is currently occupying it, and creates a "shared present tense.” In a landscape defined by personalized feeds, the station offers a singular experience: somewhere, at this very moment, a record is playing, and we may perhaps be listening to the same one.

Programming is built on growing relationships. The station is a repository of catalog releases and discographies from the collective, born from residencies where sound artists navigate the tension between limitation and freedom via the medium of the internet. The music here is held together by connections: everyone on the station has played together, or will.

ETX.FM is not presented as a solution to the economic or systemic ills of the music industry. The collective has chosen to pull their work back from the mood-branded playlists and host it in a place built around the way the work asks to be heard, and in so doing performs an exercise in framing.

Like the residency process itself, the station is a living thing. As the collective evolves, so will the station. It is an instrument of patience in a culture of immediacy, and for those who choose to drop in, the rules are simple: stay attentive, remain open, and put the music first.

For now, the station is on. Tune in; something is playing.
